Vienna a decade ago: part II

This is weird. In my notes for Friday, I have headings for “Judengasse” and “Hoher Market” but no actual notes; then under the heading “Albertina” I have copious notes for that museum’s retrospective of the 20th century South African artist William Kentridge. But the only thing I remember was one fragment of an 8-part film installation called “I Am Not Me, The House Is Mine”. It sounded like a Talking Heads song, but in fact it was the transcript from Nikolai Bukharin’s Feb. 26, 1937 Communist Party Central Committee Plenary Trial. In it the purged Communist begs to be given 25 years in Siberia instead of a death sentence, before a jeering crowd presided over by Stalin. “But you must

Czechs are loyal fans of ice hockey. Most of the citizens are familiar with many hockey players, but perhaps, the most famous and well-known one is Jaromír Jágr. He succeeded in the Czech local league and the National Hockey League (NHL) throughout his career.  Jágr’s passion for hockey started pretty early. When he was three years old, he showed considerable interest in skating. In one of his interviews, he admitted that he does 1,000 squats daily from the age of seven. When he turned 15, he already played in the highest level of competition in Czechoslovakia for HC Kladno. Two years later, Jágr became the youngest player in Czechoslovakia’s national team. Fun fact: 68 is the number he was wearing

Google Search Data Shows How the Biggest Beauty Trends in Europe Compare to the Rest of the World  The origins of skincare and cosmetics can be traced back thousands of years to Ancient Egypt, and throughout the centuries that have since passed, beauty trends have continued to evolve. From winged eyeliner and beehive hairdos to ultra-thin eyebrows and brown lipstick, some have yo-yoed in and out of the beauty scene over the years, while others remain firmly on the agenda – in fact, false lashes have been en vogue since 18991. But what are some of the biggest beauty crazes today, and how do they compare around the world?  To find out, The Body Shop analyzed online search data from 64 countries

One of the things Loket Castle is famous for is its dragon. ⠀
⠀
A giant castle that imprisoned a queen and houses a dragon is a thing of fairytales, except in the Czech Republic, where castles, princes, and magical spirits are intertwined into our history.⠀
⠀
Located near Karlovy Vary, Loket Castle was built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style and was most likely made to serve as a border fortress. ⠀
⠀
While Loket Castle has a long and prominent history in the Czech Republic, it is also the home of many curious creatures. Rather than a young woman with long, golden hair, one of the Loket Castle towers is said to house a dragon. The dragon is benevolent, and apparently, he is happy to light candles and torches for women. He survives on a people-friendly diet of horses and enjoys being scratched behind his ears.⠀

The Czech government is set to spend 250 million CZK to develop a Czech COVID-19 vaccine.⠀
⠀
Jan Blatný, Minister of Health, previously said the plan wasn’t worth pursuing in December, claiming that “The Ministry of Health sees no reason for further support.” Now, against the opinions of some experts, Blatný has decided to give the project his support.⠀
⠀
40 million CZK will be spent on paying staff. 30-40 million CZK will be given to the State Institute for Public Health, 40-80 million CZK will go toward establishing a production site, 40-80 million CZK will be the “operating costs,” academic researchers will be entitled to 20 million CZK, and another 20 million CZK will be spent on institutional overhead.⠀

2. ZACHRANKA⠀
If you have an emergency, you simply activate the app, which then will call emergency services for you. The app pinpoints your GPS location and will connect you to mountain rescue if that’s where you are. ⠀
⠀
3. PRAGUER⠀
Through the app (available to all, EU or not), users have access to contacts to government offices for anything immigration related, family support services and emergency situations.⠀
⠀
4. DUOLINGO⠀
Let’s face it, Czech is very hard to learn. And Duolingo makes that both easy and fun.⠀
